Q&A with Dr. Vu
What is your favorite animated movie or cartoon?
Currently KPop Demon Hunters is my favorite movie! Bluey and Dragon Tales are my favorite shows.
What is your favorite children's book?
The Percy Jackson series and Junie B. Jones book series are my favorite children's books! They were the book series that got me into reading!
What was your favorite childhood toy?
American Girl Dolls, Polly Pockets and LEGOs!
Who is your greatest inspiration?
My parents are my greatest inspiration. They immigrated to the US from Vietnam with nothing but the clothes they had on. To see them become so successful in life after facing so many challenges in a new country, has been very inspiring!
What are your hobbies and interests outside of work?
Traveling, discovering new restaurants and coffee shops, going to work out classes (Pilates, HIIT, and spin classess), quoting TikToks, discussing pop culture (mainly Taylor Swift), shopping at Costco, and spending time with my cat, Django.
What inspired you to work in pediatrics?
My initial interest in pediatrics started when I was about 10. My childhood friend was diagnosed with cancer at that time, and I would go to every appointment with her. Seeing how kindly she was treated by all of the medical staff was very impactful. The doctors also made sure I felt comfortable and explained what was going on with my friend to me which made things feel less scary. As I went through my rotations in medical school, I was the most excited and happy during my peds rotation! I took that as a sign that pediatrics was the right field for me!
What unique qualities, skills, or services set you apart, and how do you build a positive rapport with patients and their families?
I believe what sets me apart is my ability to connect with both children and parents in a way that builds trust. I take time to ask about their lives outside of medicine like their interests or weekend plans. I like to get to know families as a whole because this makes visits more fun and less scary! I also explain medical information in easy-to-understand terms, ensuring families feel comfortable and confident in their care.
