Q&A with Caroline

What is your favorite animated movie or cartoon?

As a kid, my favorite cartoons were Dragon Tales & Scooby Doo! As a grown up, my favorite animated movies are Inside Out & Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.

What is your favorite children's book?

My favorite children’s book is James and the Giant Peach by Roald Dahl. It became my favorite because my grandfather read it to me each night before bed, turning the story into a shared experience full of adventure and magic.

What was your favorite childhood toy?

My baby doll or my multitude of stuffed animals were probably my favorite toys.

Who is your greatest inspiration?

My grandpa is my greatest inspiration - he was so full of life, he loved SO big, and he held to a strong moral compass. He made you feel like you could do or be anything you wanted to be. I try to emulate his love and care in both my professional and personal life.

What are your hobbies and interests outside of work?

Spending time with friends, family, and my dog, Pongo, is my favorite thing to do outside of work. I also enjoy reading and staying physically active - typically walking or hiking, lifting, or yoga.

What inspired you to work in pediatrics?

I have loved kids since I was a kid myself, taking pride in being a mother to my baby doll, being the best big sister I could be to my younger brother, and seeking out babysitting opportunities. I adore kids' curiosity and awe. They are such fun company!
I love pediatric care because it is inspiring to witness kids' remarkable resilience and impressive problem-solving skills AND I so appreciate the unique aspect of caring for not just the child, but the whole family.

What unique qualities, skills, or services set you apart, and how do you build a positive rapport with patients and their families?

My nursing background has deeply shaped how I care for children and their families as a pediatric nurse practitioner. I was in the trenches with parents giving their children medications, drawing blood, and navigating uncertainty! It taught me to approach each patient holistically, considering the whole child within the context of their family and daily life, and to partner closely with both children and caregivers when planning care.
I chose to become a pediatric nurse practitioner to support children not only when they are sick, but also in staying well and thriving. I strive to create a welcoming environment where parents and children feel comfortable, heard, and involved.

How do you accommodate patients with special needs?

All of the providers in our clinic accomodate patients with special needs by striving for patient- and family-centered care. Our clinic ensures physical accessibility and allows extra time for visits. Our providers use preferred communication styles, prioritize family concerns, and perform trauma-informed exams. With the help of our resource and counseling coordinator, Kids Plus advocates for support and utilization of resources in schools and in kids' communities.
