Q&A with Dr. Karlovits
What is your favorite animated movie or cartoon?
The Little Mermaid because it’s about fitting in in a world that is new and different.
What is your favorite children's book?
The Narina Chronicles. The books explore a child’s sense of adventure and making new friends in a far off land. I loved the books so much growing up I wrote a sequel to the series and won my middle school book writing contest.
What was your favorite childhood toy?
No doubt legos! I have three children of my own and my mom saved all my original legos. My kids and I had so much fun creating new towns with the blocks I felt like I was a child again.
Who is your greatest inspiration?
My mother was my greatest inspiration. She was always my biggest cheerleader, supporting me and telling me I could do anything I set my mind too. As a family we immigrated from Denmark to the United States when I was 4 years old. My mom didn’t even know how to speak English. As a child I watched my mother go through college and get a degree. We had very little money but through success in hard work and education through American schools I became a doctor and my sister a lawyer. We truly lived the American dream.
What are your hobbies and interests outside of work?
I love spending time with my family outside in nature. My family is active in many sports. We trail run together, hike, play racket sports and even golf as a family. I also play on a paddle ball team for fun in the winter. I also love to cook and love teaching my children how to make dinner in the kitchen.
What inspired you to work in pediatrics?
I love working with children and their families. I love watching the children grow and become such kind interesting adults. I love helping them and their families along the way through any bumps or health hardships that arise. I especially have a passion for nutrition and healthy living and enjoy sharing a healthy lifestyle goal with families.
What unique qualities, skills, or services set you apart, and how do you build a positive rapport with patients and their families?
I have been a pediatrician for over 19 years and a mother to three wonderful children and I am great at listening to my families. If you listen long enough a mother or father will be able to share with you what is going on with their child. I also have interests in nutrition, exercise and healthy eating which adds value to all children learning how to fuel their bodies. I’m also a lactation consultant so I can help young mothers with breastfeeding issues as well.
How do you accommodate patients with special needs?
Of course. Accommodating patients with special needs is what pediatricians do. I specifically have my niece with Downs Syndrome and severe speech apraxia who lives down the street from me who I see three times a week. I support her and all children with special needs in making sure they know how loved and supported they are. Things we take for granted like speaking, walking or reading can be a real challenge for a child with special needs. I as your pediatrician am your greatest cheerleader and advocate that you get all the support you need.
